The anti-corruption bureau arrested a senior officer with the sales tax (GST) department of the Maharashtra government for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from the complainant to the tune of Rs 20 lakh.
The ACB official said, Dhananjay Shirsat an assistant sales tax commissioner has been arrested for the alleged crime. The deputy superintendent of police (ACB) Maya More stated that Shirsat had accepted the bribe amount of Rs 20 lakh out of the demanded sum of Rs 30 lakh which was the first installment.
Mr. Shirsat had made a demand of Rs 30 lakh from a complainant who owns a hotel in the Kapurbawdi locality of the city for not carrying out the assessment for last year and issue of a new GST registration.
Irked by the demand, the complainant filed a complaint with the Thane ACB officials who verified the complaint and after which laid a trap on Shirsat and arrested the officer accepting the bribe amount of Rs 20 lakh from the complainant, the ACB official reportedly said.
An offence under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered with the Thane Nagar Police station, the official added in the release.
