The Central Bureau of Investigation ( CBI ) arrested the Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) superintendent in Rourkela, located in Sundargarh district, after he was caught accepting a bribe from a contractor.
The arrested GST superintendent, found himself under the scrutiny of law enforcement when sources revealed that he had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs. 50,000 from a contractor. The bribe was purportedly solicited in exchange for expediting the clearance of official documents.
Prompted by the contractor’s information, the CBI swiftly formulated a plan to catch Kumar red-handed in the act of accepting the illicit payment. Executing the strategy, the contractor visited the GST office at Civil Township in Rourkela on Thursday, delivering the initial instalment of Rs. 20,000 to Kumar. Seizing the opportune moment, CBI officials entered the room and apprehended Kumar on the spot.
As of now, there have been no official responses from either the CBI or the GST Commissioner regarding the incident. The successful operation not only exposes an alleged instance of corruption within a government office but also underscores the dedication of law enforcement agencies to combat such practices and uphold the integrity of public service institutions.
