On May 16, 2024, the Customs Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal ( CESTAT ) released a circular addressing the backlog of appeals predating 2018. The circular, issued under the directive of the CESTAT president, emphasises the urgent need to address long-standing appeals prior to 2018.
Accordingly, the Registry has been instructed to prioritise the listing of these appeals, ensuring their prompt disposal. This aims to expedite the resolution process for appeals predating 2018.
The circular states as follows:
āOn a review of the monthly statement of appeals, long pending cases have come to the notice of the Hon’ble President It has since been directed that all appeals prior to the year 2018 Shall be listed by the Registry on priority basis.
The notice of hearing/cause list may state that no adjournment would be granted to such appeals.ā
