Q1. What is e-Pay Tax?

e-Pay Tax is an online facility by the Income Tax Department of India allowing taxpayers to pay direct taxes like Advance Tax, Self-Assessment Tax, and more electronically, without visiting a bank.

Q2. Who can use the e-Pay Tax facility?

The e-Pay Tax service is available to all taxpayers, including individuals, businesses, and companies that are required to pay direct taxes.

Q3. How can I access the e-Pay Tax service?

You can access it through the Income Tax Department’s official portal by logging into your account or using the “e-Pay Tax” option on the homepage.

Q4. What types of taxes can be paid via e-Pay Tax?

You can pay Advance Tax, Self-Assessment Tax, Regular Assessment Tax, Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), Tax Collected at Source (TCS), and other direct taxes.

Q5.Can I pay taxes without logging in to the Income Tax portal?

Yes, you can pay taxes without logging in by using the “e-Pay Tax” option on the homepage, allowing you to make payments using basic details like PAN or TAN.

Q6. What are the available payment methods for e-Pay Tax?

The payment methods include net banking, debit cards, credit cards, UPI, and RTGS/NEFT through authorized banks.

Q7. How do I get a receipt for my payment?

A Challan Identification Number (CIN) is generated after successful payment, serving as the receipt. It can be downloaded from the portal.

Q8. What happens if my payment fails?

In case of payment failure, retry the payment after some time or use another payment method. If the amount is debited, it will be refunded by the bank.

Q9. What will happen if no payment is initiated after creation of Challan (CRN)?

A partially created Challan remains in the “Saved Drafts” tab unless it is finally generated along with the Challan Reference Number (CRN). After generation of CRN, it moves to “Generated Challan” tab and is valid for 15 days after the date of generation of CRN. Taxpayer may initiate payment against the CRN within this validity period.  If no payment is initiated in the said period, CRN will expire, and taxpayer will have to generate a fresh CRN for making the payment.  

In case, Challan (CRN) is generated on or after 16th March for the payment of ‘Advance Tax’, then the valid till date is by default set as 31st March of that Financial Year.Q10. Is it possible to correct a payment if incorrect details are entered?

Q11.Can I cancel or reverse a payment made through e-Pay Tax?

No, payments once made cannot be canceled or reversed through the portal. If there are any issues, you must consult with the tax department.

Q12. Is there any charge for using the e-Pay Tax facility?

The Income Tax Department does not charge for using e-Pay Tax. However, banks may charge transaction fees depending on the method used (e.g., credit card, debit card etc).

Q13. Can I make tax payments for someone else?

Yes, you can pay taxes on behalf of another taxpayer by entering their PAN or TAN while completing the payment process.

Q14. Can I make part payments using e-Pay Tax?

Yes, part payments are allowed, but you must ensure that the entire liability is settled before the due date to avoid interest or penalties.

Q15. Which are Authorized Banks for which tax payments are required to be made through the e-Filing portal?

Presently, Axis Bank, Bandhan Bank, Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Central Bank of India, City Union Bank, DCB Bank, Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank ,IndusInd Bank, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, Karur Vysya Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, Punjab National Bank, RBL Bank, South Indian Bank, State Bank of India, UCO Bank & Union Bank of India have been enabled for making tax payment through the e-Filing portal.

All payments through Authorised Banks  are required to be made through the e-Filing portal only.

Taxpayers can make payment through Non-Authorised Banks with NEFT/RTGS and Payment Gateway (Bank of Maharashtra, Canara Bank, Federal Bank, State Bank of India, HDFC bank & Kotak Bank offers this facility as of now) as the new modes of payment in e-Filing system.
