The Directorate General of Foreign Trade ( DGFT ) has notified that the fresh ( green ) Areca nuts from Bhutan can be imported via two additional ports LCS Hatisar ( INHT5B ) and LCS Darranga ( INDRGB ) without Minimum Import Price ( MIP ).
As per the new notification issued under the authority of the Foreign Trade ( Development & Regulation ) Act, 1992, and the Foreign Trade Policy 2023, the import policy for Areca nuts has been amended. This adjustment allows for the import of 17,000 metric tonnes of fresh Areca nut from Bhutan without the MIP condition, providing further flexibility to the trade arrangements between the two countries.

Earlier, the import of these Areca nuts was limited to two Land Customs Stations ( LCS ), namely Jaigaon and Chamurchi. However, with this new notification, two additional ports have been opened for the import of this commodity—LCS Hatisar ( INHT5B ) and LCS Darranga ( INDRGB ).
To import Areca nuts through these specified ports, traders must possess a valid port-specific Registration Certificate issued by the DGFT. The removal of the MIP condition means that importers will no longer be required to meet a specific price threshold for bringing in fresh Areca nuts.

This policy change is a partial modification of the previous Notification No. 17/2023 dated 3rd July 2023. By adding LCS Hatisar and LCS Darranga to the list of approved ports, the government aims to enhance the ease of doing business and strengthen the economic ties between India and Bhutan, particularly in the agricultural sector.
