The Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog has presented the budget of 2024 on February 12th February. The present budget was her 4th budget under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Assam government has announced a 2% reduction in Motor Vehicle Tax and exemptions on registration fees for new electric vehicles. To promote eco-friendly practices and sustainable transportation, the government also introduced several initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles ( EVs ).
Recognizing the importance of responsible vehicle disposal, Assam has also implemented a Vehicle Scrappage Policy, resulting in the scientific dismantling of 3,000 vehicles. This move not only addresses environmental concerns but also ensures the safe and efficient management of end-of-life vehicles.
Furthermore, in a bid to revolutionise public transportation and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, Assam has introduced 100 Compressed Natural Gas ( CNG ) buses and 200 electric buses in Guwahati city through the Assam State Transport Corporation ( ASTC ). These buses represent a significant step towards cleaner and more sustainable urban mobility.
Looking ahead, Assam aims to expand its electric vehicle fleet by introducing another 100 EVs in the Guwahati metropolitan area in the fiscal year 2024-2025. This ambitious initiative is part of a broader strategy to transition public transportation in the city to 100% green and fossil-fuel-free alternatives, thereby reducing air pollution and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
