CBEC Chief Asks Commissioner (Appeals) to Dispose all Pending Appeals before 31st Dec [Read Letter]

The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) chair person, Smt Vanaja Sarna directed the Chief Commissioners to monitor that all the first appeals pending before the Commissioner (Appeals) are disposed before 31st December 2017.

With a view to reduce tax litigation, tax officers of the Board had identified 7,312 cases fit for withdrawal, which can be from High Court and the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT).

The Finance Ministry in a statement on Monday said that Field formations have already filed withdrawal applications in 980 and 2,174 cases in High Courts and CESTAT, respectively. Out of this the High Court has allowed withdrawal in 250 cases and CESTAT in 202 cases.

Pointing out this, the CBEC Chief also asked the officials to take concerted effects to ensure that 100% of the cases identified for withdrawal are positively within precise timeline.
