The Chief Justice of India( CJI) DY Chandrachud, who is on the verge of retirement, has recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna, as the next Supreme Court CJI. CJI has written to the Union Government recommending Justice Khanna’s name.
As per the seniority-based tradition for appointments to the CJI position, probably, Justice Khanna would be the Next CJI. CJI Chandracuhd is demitting office on November 10, 2024.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna is a prominent judge of the Supreme Court of India, known for his significant contributions to Indian jurisprudence. He began his law practice 1983 in the areas of taxation, arbitration, commercial and environmental matters among other things. Justice Khanna was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was made permanent judge one year later. He was elevated to the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna is the nephew of the late Justice Hans Raj Khanna, who is remembered for his dissenting judgment in the ADM Jabalpur case during the Emergency, a judgment widely respected for upholding personal liberty.
During his tenure in the Delhi High Court, he delivered several landmark judgments covering a wide range of areas, including arbitration, taxation, constitutional law, and commercial disputes. The elevation of Justice Khanna to the Supreme Court in January 2019, stirred some controversy as his promotion was made while superseding several other senior judges of the High Courts. However, the elevation was based on merit and his performance as a High Court judge.
He was part of the bench that delivered the landmark judgment in the Essar Steel insolvency case, clarifying the role of financial and operational creditors under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
And also was part of the bench that struck down Section 497 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalized adultery, stating that the law was archaic and violated the constitutional right to equality.
Justice Khanna played a key role in the Ayodhya land dispute case, which saw the Supreme Court ruling in favor of building the Ram Temple at the disputed site.

If he is appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna will serve from November 2024 to May 2025. His tenure, though brief, is expected to leave a significant impact, especially on issues related to constitutional law, human rights, and judicial reforms.
