The Customs officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport ( RGIA ) in Hyderabad successfully intercepted and seized 5.92 kg of smuggled heroin valued at Rs. 41 crore. The official release on Sunday detailed the events leading to the confiscation, shedding light on the diligent efforts of the Hyderabad Customs in combating contraband smuggling.

The operation unfolded after customs officials engaged in passenger profiling and conducted meticulous surveillance at the airport. Their attention was drawn to a female passenger traveling from Lusaka, Zambia, to Hyderabad via Singapore. The strategic interception took place as the passenger, a South African national, arrived at the RGIA.

Upon scrutinizing the passenger’s hand baggage, customs officials discovered the illicit substance cleverly concealed within an inner layer of the bag and discreetly tucked inside a document folder. The subsequent examination of the baggage and folder revealed a white powdery substance that, upon testing, was identified as heroin—an illicit narcotic substance classified under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances ( NDPS ) Act, 1985.

The release emphasized that the passenger has been promptly arrested under the NDPS Act, with the mentioned price of the seized drug based on the prevailing international market rate. Hyderabad Customs, committed to curbing the inflow of contraband into the country, underscored the sustained efforts made by its officials in combating smuggling activities.

This successful operation not only highlights the efficacy of customs profiling and surveillance systems but also underscores the continuous dedication of law enforcement agencies in safeguarding the nation against the threats posed by illegal drug trafficking. As investigations proceed, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in securing borders and preventing the illegal trade of narcotics.
