Based on specific intelligence inputs, the Delhi Customs Preventive unit undertook legal action on January 20th and 21st, 2024, targeting the illicit importation and storage of foreign-origin cigarettes.
In the course of this operation, a substantial haul of 12.22 lakh cigarettes from various renowned brands such as ESSE, Mond, Dunhill, Davidoff, Gudang Garam, Platinum Seven, was seized. An initial assessment of the confiscated cigarettes places their value at approximately Rs. 2 crore, and a more detailed valuation is in progress.
The operation extended to the Katra Bariyan area in Nayabans, Delhi-06, where a thorough search was conducted across two shops and three warehouses.
The ensuing investigation brought to light the complicity of these establishments in the unlawful import, storage, and distribution of diverse foreign-origin cigarette brands. Particularly noteworthy was the absence of mandated statutory health warnings on the seized cigarette packets, thereby subjecting them to taxation under the Customs Act, 1962.
There are suspicions surrounding illegal importation practices, circumvention of Customs duties, and violations of the Cigarettes & other Tobacco Products (Packaging & Labelling) Amendment Rules, 2022, suggesting that these cigarettes may have found their way into the domestic market.
The ongoing inquiry is delving into the roles of suppliers, dealers, and other stakeholders involved in this illicit activity. The investigative process is thorough and comprehensive, aiming to uncover the intricacies of the entire matter.
