As the Government is all set to deactivate all PAN Cards that are not linked with aadhaar card, the income tax department has issued an urgent notice to all taxpayers advising them to link their PAN with their aadhaar urgently to avoid consequences.
“As per Income tax Act, 1961, it is mandatory for all PAN holders, who do not fall under the exempt category, to link their PAN with Aadhaar before 31.3.2023. From 1.04.2023, the unlinked PAN shall become inoperative. Urgent Notice. Don’t delay, link it today!,” the income tax department informed via twitter handle.
Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a digit unique alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department.
Since, 2017, it is mandatory to quote your Permanent Account Number (PAN) while filing your Income Tax Return. If you have not been allotted a PAN, you can generate your e-PAN with the help of your Aadhaar and a mobile number registered with your Aadhaar.
As per CBDT circular dated 30th March 2022, every person who has been allotted a PAN as on 1st July 2017 and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar number is required to link PAN with AADHAAR on or before 31st March, 2022. Taxpayers who failed to do so are liable to pay a fee of Rs. 500 till 30th June, 2022 and thereafter a fee of Rs. 1000 will be applicable before submission of PAN-AADHAAR linkage request.
