Ex- Central Excise Superintendent Sentenced to 3 Years Rigorous Imprisonment for Bribery by CBI Court

The Special Judge for CBI cases in Ahmedabad has sentenced a former Superintendent of Central Excise, Range-IV, Division-II, Ahmedabad, to three years of Rigorous Imprisonment ( RI ) and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh in a bribery case.

The CBI had registered the case on February 15, 2013, against the ex-officer for demanding illegal gratification of ₹14,500 from a complainant. The bribe was solicited as a “reward” for processing the Monthly Returns and export documents filed on behalf of a private company over the previous seven months. Ambavale accepted the bribe and was arrested on February 16, 2013.

Following the arrest, CBI conducted searches at the accused’s residential and official premises, gathering further evidence. After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet against Ambavale on September 30, 2013.

Recently, the CBI also arrested GST officers and private individuals including a CA for bribery of Rs. 60 lakhs. The CA was caught red-handed for taking bribes for the GST officials. The department also suspected the hawala channels.

All individuals involved in the bribery were arrested and produced before the Special Court for CBI cases in Mumbai. The Court granted police custody of the CGST Superintendent and the CA until September 10, 2024, while the private individual was remanded to judicial custody.
