The Supreme Court granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal from today until June 1 in connection with a money laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. He has been directed to surrender to prison authorities by June 2. Justices Khanna and Dipankar Datta, comprising the Bench, indicated that they will soon issue a detailed order on this matter.
Earlier, they cautioned against the Chief Minister carrying out official duties or signing documents if granted interim bail, citing potential widespread repercussions. “Such actions would have far-reaching consequences,” noted Justice Khanna.
Opposition leaders have welcomed the decision, emphasizing that the “fight to safeguard democracy” will now gain momentum. Congress leader Pawan Khera expressed appreciation for the Supreme Court’s intervention in granting bail to Arvind Kejriwal, adding a hope that the prime minister, upon stepping down on June 4, will reflect upon the type of politics he has pursued.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Directorate of Enforcement ( ED ) had opposed any interim relief for AAP supremo Kejriwal, arguing that granting bail for campaign purposes would set a dangerous precedent. The agency’s 44-page affidavit stated that providing such relief would encourage criminal behavior among politicians who would exploit election cycles to evade arrest.
In response to the ED’s affidavit, AAP lodged a complaint with the Supreme Court’s registry, alleging a disregard for legal procedures, especially given the impending final decision scheduled for Friday. Kejriwal is currently in Tihar jail, undergoing his sixth remand period until May 20, awaiting release on bail as the situation unfolds.
