Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, has been shaken by a major arrest involving a high-ranking official. An officer in the State Tax Department has been arrested for accepting bribes, causing significant unrest.
This unsettling event came to light when a vigilance team caught Assistant Commissioner Shashikant Dubey red-handed at the GST office on Laxmi Road, Dalanwala, accepting a bribe.
The arrest followed a complaint from a Dehradun restaurant owner, who alleged that Dubey had demanded a bribe of one lakh rupees by manipulating the restaurant’s bills under the pretext of penalties. The demand, which was persistently enforced, was eventually reduced to seventy-five thousand rupees. After the complaint was lodged, the vigilance team executed a sting operation, leading to Dubey’s apprehension while he accepted the bribe.
Following his arrest, the vigilance team searched Dubey’s residence on Kainal Road and other locations, uncovering assets and gathering further evidence. Several key documents were seized during these searches.
Notably, Shashikant Dubey, a 2015 batch PCS officer, had his arrest confirmed by Superintendent of Police Renu Lohani of the vigilance department, who stated that actions were taken based on the complaint.
Lohani revealed that searches were also conducted at Dubey’s residence on Kainal Road and other premises. The vigilance team has also announced rewards for informants. They have urged the public to report any instances of officials or employees demanding bribes.
The team encouraged individuals with information about assets beyond known income sources to contact the toll-free helpline number 1064 or the WhatsApp helpline number 9456592300, assuring strict confidentiality for whistleblowers.
