The Central Board of Indirect Taxes (CBIC) while responding to an RTI application filed by an individual, revealed that the Government has collected Rupees 1030 Crores towards GST penalty in the last four years.
CA Ram Bajaj from Rajasthan filed an application under the Right to Information Act, 2005 wherein he sought for the information relating to the amount of net penalty collected by the Government for the period starting from Financial Year 2017-18 to 2020-21 until the month of February, 2021.
While Responding to the application, the Office of Principal Chief Controller of Accounts, CBIC provided the following information.
A reply to RTI Filed by a CA Ram Bajaj from Rajasthan revealed that CBIC has collected Penalties of Rs. 102 Crore For financial Year 2017-18, Rs. 480 Crore For financial Year 2018-19, Rs. 570 Crore For financial Year 2019-20 and Rs. 460 Crore For financial Year 2020β21 (Till February 2021). CBIC has collected around Rs. 1612 Crore from July 2017 to February 2021.
The CBIC enclosed the month wise details of Total Net Penalties (in crores) under GST, collected, as per the books of accounts of office of Pr. CCA, CBIC for all the four financial years.
As per the provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2005, the persons dissatisfied with the information, can file an appeal to the First Appellate Authority within the prescribed timelimit.

Last week, while responding to another RTI application, the Board had revealed that the Government has collected Rupees 1,07,02,47,136/- towards late fee on delay in filing GSTR 3B and other GST Returns in last two years. However, there is no information regarding the number of late fees collected from 2017 to 2019.
