The Gujarat police have filed an FIR over a fake video of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on GST.
The video clip falsely shows Nirmala Sitharaman allegedly referring to the Goods and Services Tax ( GST ) as the “Gopaniya Suchna Tax.” This misleading video was shared by Chirag Patel on his X handle, who is a USA Resident. The video was posted on 7th July 2024 and the same was removed.
The Minister State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi in his ‘X’ account clarified that “This deceptive act of spreading deep fake videos to mislead citizens is abhorrent. Gujarat police have registered an FIR against this person for spreading this deep fake video.”
He further stated that “Trying to mislead citizens Let’s not fall prey to such manipulative tactics and prfioritize truth and accountability in our digital spaces. Together, we can combat misinformation and safeguard the trust of the public.”
The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has not made any public statements regarding the video at this time. This type of act is a threat to both the citizens and the nation. There are unreported incidents of the fake videos or the people who are still struggling to end the cases. It is important that the cyber wing takes proactive measures to raise awareness about the legal consequences of creating and disseminating such sensitive fake videos.
