With the September 30, 2024 deadline for submitting tax audit reports fast approaching, professionals and taxpayers are grappling with technical issues on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal.
The issues began around late September 17, 2024, when many users reported being unable to upload tax audit reports due to attachment failures.
According to CA Deepak Chopra, Chairman of the Direct Tax Committee of the Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA), the high traffic on the portal, caused by the looming deadline, has led to slow performance and frequent technical errors. “The portal’s sluggish response and inability to accept attachments have caused significant disruptions,” Chopra explained.

Anita Basrur, Partner at Sudit K. Parekh & Co. LLP, described the added stress on auditors and taxpayers, sharing that the portal was completely down on September 18 and only became operational late at night. This downtime has compounded pressure on professionals trying to meet compliance deadlines.
Users have taken to social media to highlight the ongoing problems, with many calling for urgent action. Several chartered accountants have suggested that the technical difficulties are likely the result of inadequate infrastructure to handle the surge in traffic.
