The deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) is approaching, but the government has not yet confirmed an extension. Nevertheless, various organizations have submitted their appeals to the Finance Ministry, requesting an extension of the due date.

Last year, the due date was extended till 30th September 2022 for ITR filing of individuals, HUF/ AOP/BOI (books of accounts not to be audited) from 31st July 2022.

ITR filing is the process of submitting income tax returns to the appropriate tax authorities, which are a declaration of an individual’s or entity’s income. Taxpayers must submit this annual form, which includes comprehensive information about their income, deductions, and any owing taxes or refunds.

The Technical issues with the Income Tax portal are cited as the main cause of the ITR filing delay. Through Twitter and other sources, the tax experts have voiced their complaints about the technical issues.

The technical glitches as submitted by the tax professionals:

  1. Income Tax portal showing ‘Page not found’.
  2. Difficulty in downloading Form 26AS
  3. Errors changing itself
  4. Issues in Resume Filing option

These are a few of the problems that have been acknowledged. The errors made, however, can be common for some people or unique for others. The tax professionals are drawing the attention of the income tax department to the issues at hand.

Even while the government is pleased with the 3 crores in total filings to date, many taxpayers and professionals are still having trouble submitting their ITRs by the deadline. In addition to the technological concerns, the unusual problems like the flood in Delhi and other major cities are badly influencing this.

The Sales Tax Bar Association has requested that the deadline be extended at least until August 31, 2023. However, Sanjay Malhotra, the Revenue Secretary, made it clear in an interview that no ITR filing extensions will be permitted. The taxpayers were likewise exhorted to file before the deadline.
