PAN Aadhar linking reminder by Income Tax Department
The Income Tax Department reminded everyone to link their Permanent Account Number (PAN) with their Aadhaar number by May 31st, 2024.
If you missed this deadline, the result will be a higher Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) or Tax Collected at Source (TCS).
Linking PAN Card with Aadhar Card: Know these Steps
There are three ways to link your PAN with Aadhaar:
Online: Visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ and follow the steps under “Link Aadhaar.”
SMS: Send an SMS with the format UIDPAN <10-digit PAN> <12-digit Aadhaar> to 567678 or 56161.
Offline: Visit a PAN Service Provider or Aadhaar enrollment centre.
Consequences of non-linking of PAN with Aadhaar
Notably, this is not the first time that the department has asked citizens for linking their PAN and Aadhaar Cards.
In a circular issued on April 23, 2024 (CBDT Circular No. 6/2024), the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) outlined the regulations and potential consequences of not linking PAN with Aadhaar.

To check if your PAN and Aadhaar are already linked, Check the linking status on the Income Tax Department website – Income Tax Portal under “Quick Links” -> “Link Aadhaar Status.”
Higher TDS/TCS Deduction from June 1, 2024 onwards
You’ll face a higher tax deduction at source (TDS), if your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar even after 31st May, 2024.
Inoperative PAN: Your PAN card may become inactive, causing problems like difficulty in filing income tax returns and delays in processing tax refunds.
