The Reserve Bank of India ( RBI ) has declared an unprecedented dividend of ₹2.11 lakh crore to the Government of India for the financial year 2023-24.

This announcement was made during the 608th meeting of the Central Board of Directors, held earlier this week under the leadership of Governor Shri Shaktikanta Das.

According to an official press release, the decision was influenced by the significant economic revival in FY 2022-23. The Contingent Risk Buffer ( CRB ) was increased from 5.50 percent, a rate maintained during the challenging years of 2018-19 to 2021-22 due to adverse macroeconomic conditions and the COVID-19 pandemic, to 6.00 percent last fiscal year.

With the current robust and resilient economic outlook, the Board has further increased the CRB to 6.50 percent for FY 2023-24. Consequently, the Board approved the transfer of ₹2,10,874 crore as surplus to the central government.

The committee also highlighted the recommendation to maintain risk provisioning under the CRB within a range of 6.5 to 5.5 percent of the RBI’s balance sheet, ensuring sufficient buffers to support economic stability.
